More than 70 years ago, residents of Boulder City, Nevada helped construct one of the largest renewable power plants ever created–the Hoover Dam. Now home to Copper Mountain Solar 1–one of the largest photovoltaic (PV) solar power plants in the U.S.–Boulder City has cemented its legacy as a sustainable energy leader.

Copper Mountain Solar 1 uses nearly one million PV solar panels spread across more than 450 acres to convert sunlight into enough renewable electricity to serve about 17,000 homes annually.

Power generated at the 58-megawatt (MW) solar plant is sold to Pacific Gas & Electric under a 20-year contract. Copper Mountain Solar 1 was completed in December 2010 in less than a year, creating about 350 local construction jobs at peak.

In 2011, the solar plant was named "Solar Project of the Year" by Renewable Energy World, beating out hundreds of nominees in the category.

  • Created about 350 construction jobs at peak and seven full-time positions
  • Generates about $60 million over the life of the project for Boulder City
  • Located near existing power plants and transmission lines
  • Requires no water to generate electricity
  • Produces a new source of clean, emission-free electricity
